The Experimental Hepatology Laboratory, directed by Dr. Marco Arrese, investigates basic and clinical aspects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a hepatic manifestation of the so-called metabolic syndrome that currently reaches epidemic levels due to its close relationship with obesity. The scientific interest of Dr. Arrese is focused on researching topics related to the physiopathology and pathogenesis of NAFLD, developing and validating biomarkers of the disease, and conducting preclinical trials of intervention in experimental models to explore ways to prevent its development and progression. At the clinical level, he recruits and studies patients to identify the role of some genetic and environmental determinants of the disease in the Chilean population. NAFLD is a frequent co-morbidity of obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus 2, and some endocrine disorders, such as hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome, which has been studied by Dr. Arrese’s group in chilean patients.
